The Story of the Liberation of Lemnos

  • The Liberation of Lemnos: 8th October, 1912

The First Balkan War began on 5 October 1912, when Greece, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Montenegro demanded equal rights for Christians under Ottoman rule — and the Ottomans refused. Just one day later, Rear Admiral Pavlos Kountouriotis led the Greek fleet into the northern Aegean. His target was Lemnos, an island that had been under Ottoman control for 456 years.

On 6 October, the flagship Averof anchored in the great natural harbour of Moudros. From there, Kountouriotis sent an ultimatum to the Turkish governor: surrender the island at once. The governor requested 24 hours to consult Constantinople, but soon the admiral received intelligence that the Turks were preparing for battle rather than giving in.

Bad weather delayed the landing. The seas around Lemnos were rough, and the Greek troops could not come ashore immediately. It was not until 8 October that they finally landed. Instead of resistance, they found support. The people of Lemnos — armed with old rifles, knives and Greek flags they had hidden for generations — rushed to join the soldiers as they advanced inland.

Faced with the combined strength of the Greek fleet, the arriving troops and the overwhelming spirit of the islanders, the Ottoman garrison had no choice. Without a single shot being fired, the Turks surrendered. On that day in October 1912, Admiral Kountouriotis formally declared the island’s union with Greece.

The liberation of Lemnos was the beginning of a new chapter, but it was not the end of the story. In 1918, the Ottoman Empire officially capitulated to the Entente powers in the Armistice of Mudros, signed in the very harbour where the Greek fleet had first anchored. Finally, in 1923, the Treaty of Lausanne confirmed the cession of Lemnos and other territories to Greece, marking the true and final liberation of the island after 456 years of Ottoman occupation.
